Students often look at a problem and don't know where to start. They may have pockets of knowledge but don't know how to apply them. For example, they may know how to factor, but don't recognize when to use it, or what step comes first. As a result they rely on memorized steps and freeze when a problem is unfamiliar. Ability isn't the issue. I teach students how to identify what is usable in a problem, even when it's not obvious. I show how each step follows from the structure so they aren't guessing or memorizing anymore. Students start to feel capable, and that builds momentum.
