We knew she had been in a terrible trailering accident mid-summer; however she had raced once after the wreck and was then pulled from further races. We knew going into things that she would inevitably need some re-hab, however the extent was questionable. All the injuries and diagnosis are related to before our ownership.\r\n\r\n\r\nIn late November, we had the vet out to assess her condition, as she was in considerable pain, and was not sound. Xray’s of her front hooves, and rear left leg were taken. The results were less than ideal and shed a bleak picture on her future.\r\n\r\nShe was diagnosed with laminitis, acute and chronic, in all 4 feet. She has early signs of navicular in her right front. She requires advanced wound treatment for her back left, relating to an unhealed cut she obtained in the trailer accident. Her soles have caved, meaning without shoes or boots, she is walking flat foot and on bone-this is excruciatingly painful. In her left back leg, we discovered a splint bone fracture, that should have been healed long ago, however it is not. The vet feels strongly this is related to racing her after the accident and not having had any diagnostics run by her trainer. There is a good chance that the splint fracture is putting pressure on her suspensory ligament and causing pain and lameness. If that is the case, she will require surgery, which is roughly $3000-$5000.\r\n\r\n\r\nRight now, we are most concerned with getting her pain under control and furthering her diagnostic testing, so we can be sure to have the full picture, before making decisions about her future. This will involve an ultrasound, quoted at $195.00, plus mileage and tax, and the wound treatment is quoted at $774 plus mileage and tax.\r\n\r\n\r\nShe will require body work immediately, at a cost of $150 per session. Her right hip is dislocated, and she will require some additional work on her muscles and ligaments.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe re-hab shoes were $220, and the second set was $390. We have already covered this cost. The cost of her initial diagnostics and exam was $595.\r\n\r\n\r\nWe want to give this mare the best chance possible, before making decisions about her future. Full transparency is that right now, the Vet is suggesting euthanasia depending on the outcome of the additional testing and body work. Her quality of life is unknown, but with your help we can try to give her the best shot.\r\n\r\n\r\nX-rays, and quote for the additional diagnostics are attached.
