As a compassionate and trauma-informed educator and scientist, I want to share the skills that have helped me through stressful times, that are free and that you can use at any moment of the day. Can I invite you to look at the world in a different way? I’ve been there! And most importantly, I wish that I was taught everything that I will share with you, when I was in school! Whether that was primary, high school, college or university up to my doctoral studies. Now I share these tools with my students so that they are less anxious during exams, more focused or simply feel happier! I want you to have and master these skills now, not a moment later, so that you thrive and live your best life! I always say, as a teacher or a social-ecological marine scientist that nothing else matters if we are not feeling well. It’s our foundation. We cannot put energy elsewhere, biologically, when our nervous system is not regulated. As someone who grew up with anxiety and depression, I get it. I’ve invested so many years, especially the last four years to dive inwards and between meditation, breathwork, emotional freedom technique and gratitude list amongst others, I’ve seen big shifts and miracles in my life. I want to share this with you! I truly believe that these are all important skills that should be taught in school. Let’s be empowered! I have been trying out various exercises with my own students in school or with those I tutor and I love to witness the shifts I see! One of my students told me a few years ago that I should be a motivational speaker, because I told her a little about how our minds are programmed. Because, well, I am a biologist too, and our minds are marvellous! The amygdala is the part of our brain that triggers the fight-or-flight response. Basically, that’s the part of your brain that is keeping you out of danger and thinks we are back in prehistorical days. But instead of being chased or chase big non-human animals, there are triggers today like kids who say mean things or adults who might no get us or see us. There are many little things that can make us feel stressed out and there are also ways to hack our nervous system back to parasympathetic state, that is the state where healing and digestion take place.
