I am a math tutor and have been tutoring for 10+ years, helping students understand math more clearly, study more efficiently, and raise their grades. I am an Accountant (CPA) and hold an Honours Bachelor of Commerce degree from McMaster University. I also achieved marks in the 90s in high-school math. How do I help students understand math? I use a consistent problem-solving method throughout the course, so students are not learning a completely different approach every time the topic changes. For most questions, we follow the same structure: Identify what the question is asking. Identify the key concept, formula, or rule that applies. Separate the relevant information from the extra information, then connect the important details from the question to the concept. Substitute the information and solve the problem step by step. By repeating the same process throughout the course, students become better at recognizing how to start a question, what information matters, and which concept to use instead of feeling lost when the wording or topic changes. What kind of results have students achieved? Over the 10+ years, I have worked with students at many different starting points. I have helped students who were failing move into the mid-70s, students in the 60s and 70s move into the 70s and 80s, and students already performing in the 70s move into the mid-80s and 90s. The goal is not only to improve marks, but to help students understand the material well enough that they can approach questions more independently and spend less time feeling stuck.
