Science and math STEM high school tutor - bio/chem/phys/math

Hi there! My name is Laura. I'm an elementary, high school, and university STEM tutor with over five years' experience in helping students catch up and get ahead! I graduated in 2022 from Carleton University with a B.Sc. in Neuroscience and Mental Health, with minors in Biology and Chemistry (GPA: 11.95/12). Besides providing a strong foundation in STEM, my degree has given me insight into the various learning needs that students may have. I received the University Medal in the Faculty of Science, which is awarded to the student with the highest graduating GPA in the faculty. I also had the great fortune of working in the Hayley Lab at Carleton University, where I studied stress, depression, and Parkinson's disease. During university, I was accepted to the Amgen Scholars Program. In this role, I worked as a research assistant at the Lee Lab at the University of Toronto, contributing to research on ALS and mRNA. My academic background allows me to provide students with the tools they need to succeed at any level of education. I currently tutor all math and sciences courses at the high school level, and all life sciences courses (include statistics and math for life sciences) at the university level. I also spent a year at a non-profit teaching virtual enrichment STEM classes to students from grades 5-12 in biology, biochemistry, neuroscience, and anatomy, and offer enrichment courses to current students. One of my most popular courses is my Intro to Neuroscience, which can be adapted for any age! I'm a firm believer that confidence is key to student success. That's why I don't just tutor the class content - I also teach students strategies for succeeding in school, such as studying methods, techniques for approaching tests, and how to deal with academic anxiety. Questions are my favourite part of the job, and I always tailor my sessions to each student, because personalized learning is critical for helping students reach their potential.
